The Giol family is one of the oldest quality grape growing families in Argentina, with vineyards dating back over 100 years and an extended family whose members continue to be highly influential in the wine business. Las Nencias is the dream of Angel Morchio, one of the inheritors of Jorge Giol’s legacy, and Angel’s daughter Maria, who has studied winemaking in both Argentina and California. The project takes its name from the Las Nencias valley, located 9,843 feet above sea level, with a backdrop view of the Marmolejo glacier amid the Andes Mountains. The most distinctive feature of this place is the wild growth of “nencias” a variety of stunning blue-purple flower that adorns the label of the wines. The vineyards are farmed 100% sustainably, and the winery is moving toward organic certification. Las Nencias stands out as a winery of exceptional quality among the sea of Malbec producers pouring out of Argentina today.
Head winemaker Héctor Durigutti helps craft lovely, typical wines from the family vineyards at 3,500 feet above sea level in the Uco Valley, putting his by now recognizable stamp of personality in each bottle.Héctor Durigutti is considered one of the foremost Argentinean winemakers with great authority on Malbec. He has worked closely with renowned Italian winemakers Alberto Antonini and Attilio Pagli for several years. At least one wine writer dubbed Héctor Durigutti the “rock star” of winemaking for developing the Malbec varietal into a major wine export for Argentina.
