Winemaker's Notes:
Our fourth vintage of this appellation Cabernet, which represents a blend of hillside and valley floor vineyards. This year included the Somerston hillside vineyard, 40%; DeSantis on the valley floor just north of Zinfandel Lane, 30%; Lamoreaux in Oak Knoll, 15%; Snowden 5%; and 10% from four small parcels. Aging on the fine lees incorporates the oak so that the two years spent in 63% new barrels (a mixture of French and American) is barely noticeable. As with all of our wines, it was fermented with native yeasts and bacteria and bottled without filtration. This wine combines the harmony produced by traditional Bordelaise winemaking techniques with the voluptuousness of a great Napa Valley vintage. 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its layers of dark, plush fruit. Hints of cassis, grilled herbs, tobacco and cedar develop in the glass, adding further complexity and depth. Firm tannins frame the long finish. This is a very classic and beautiful Cabernet. In 2008 the blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, sourced from a number of sites, including Somerston, DeSantis, Lamoreaux and Snowden. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2028.-AG

Glass-staining ruby. Expressive aromas of cassis, licorice, violet and smoky minerals, complemented by subtle oak spice. Creamy, broad, sweet and lush but with lively mid-palate energy giving lift to the dark berry and floral flavors. Pliant and seamless cabernet, with firm supporting tannins adding shape and grip to the persistent finish. Ramey told me that this wine was made completely from free-run juice.-JR |
