Thousands of years ago, when the Vaca mountain range that borders the eastern side of the Napa Valley collapsed, the earth fell toward the sun and created Oakville East. Within this ideal terroir and throughout the long growing season, the rising of the sun creates perfect early morning exposure that continues throughout the day, providing optimum ripening conditions for mature, intensely flavored grapes.
Exposure is a perfect blend of fruit from the six micro-vineyards planted on the mountain. The terroir is marked by the red, iron rich soils which turn the surrounding hillsides to gold as the sun moves across the land. Each of the tiny, micro-farmed plots exhibits its own unique quality, adding to the rich luxurious blend that is Oakville East-Exposure.
Winemaker's Notes:
2006 was marked by a wet winter and delayed bud break. Cool August weather allowed longer than normal hang time with the first fruit picked on September 28th and the last harvested on October 23rd. Meticulous farming practices delivered picture-perfect clusters at the very moment of ripeness, resulting in a wine of intensity, concentration, and balance.
The blend for the 2006 Oakville East-Exposure is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petite Verdot. The higher percentage of Cabernet Franc added finesse, a rich mature fruit perfume, and wonderful earthy character. The introduction of Petite Verdot provided intense, deeply rich color, excellent concentration and added complexity. The finished wine is beautiful, with distinctive aromas of blue and black fruit, roasted plum, cedar and wonderful minerality that combine with a sweet entry and round elegant tannins. A lingering finish is supported by good structure and acid balance.
