Medium-dark ruby-garnet. Red fruits – raspberry, strawberry, cranberry – dominate the deep and powerful nose. The wine enters full and rich with red fruits, blood orange, and spice buffering the silky tannins. Surprisingly, a more masculine Zinfandel in this vintage than Carlisle Vineyard despite the lack of significant mixed blacks. Enjoy 2015 through 2020.

Another fabulous effort, the 2012 Zinfandel Papera Ranch is composed of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan that achieved 15.4% alcohol. One of my favorites in the tasting (although that’s splitting hairs), it exhibits a beautiful black fruit-scented nose with spice, pepper and a roasted meaty-like character. Dense, rich, full-bodied, beautifully balanced and impressively pure as well as layered, there are around 700 cases of this stunning Zinfandel made from vines planted in 1934. Consume it over the next 5-7 years.

Inky purple. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit liqueur, incense and candied flowers, with an intense spicy overtone. Sappy, incisive and pure, offering densely packed boysenberry and cassis flavors sharpened by juicy acidity. Weighty and seamless in texture, finishing with excellent clarity and smooth, slow-building tannins. This substantial zin would be great with braised red meats.-JR

A dollop of Carignane seems to give the 2012 Zinfandel Papera Ranch gorgeous aromatic lift to play off the wine's deep layers of fruit. Silky tannins support sweet red fruit, flowers, spices and licorice in a sexy Zinfandel that should drink beautifully right out of the gate. The blend is 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignane.-AG
