The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (70% Grenache and 30% Syrah and Mourvedre from 45-year-old vines) is a sleeper of the vintage. Dense ruby/purple-hued with an impressive nose of black fruits, meat juices, truffles, and licorice, it is a layered, velvety-textured, full-bodied effort with superb purity as well as length. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years.

A muscular version, with braised fig, bittersweet cocoa, grilled beef, roasted chestnut and maduro tobacco notes. Thick and brawny through the finish, but with fresh underlying acidity for balance. Old school. Best from 2010 through 2024. 3,000 cases made.–JM
