For over 500 years, the Baroncini family have been growing grapes and olives in the hilltop Tuscan village of San Gimignano. But it is only in the last 50 years that the family has begun making wine, and has expanded their horizons beyond their walled medieval village.

On the site of an ancient Etruscan village, the family has established Poggio Il Castellare. Near the hamlet of Castelnuove dell Abate, in the heart of the production zone of Brunello di Montalcino they are now a rising star in Montalcino.

Dried dark fruit on the nose, verging on date and prune. Full-bodied, with a dense palate of ripe fruit and supersilky tannins. This is a deep and beautiful red, delivering lots of subtle character. Fascinating. One of the undiscovered treasures of the vintage. Best after 2011. 2,000 cases made.–JS
