5 Centuries of Experience Make Great Wine

For over 500 years, the Baroncini family have been growing grapes and olives in the hilltop Tuscan village of San Gimignano. But it is only in the last 50 years that the family has begun making wine, and has expanded their horizons beyond their walled medieval village.

On the site of an ancient Etruscan village, the family has established Poggio Il Castellare. Near the hamlet of Castelnuove dell Abate, in the heart of the production zone of Brunello di Montalcino they are now a rising star in Montalcino.

One Of The Top Brunellos Rated By WS from 2005 Vintage

The 2005 Poggio Il Castellare is one of the top 2005 Brunellos rated by the Wine Spectator.  Here are the numbers if you’re interested.  157 were tasted and 70 of them scored 90 points or higher.  Pretty good vintage you have to say especially since many of the wines are less expensive then their 2004 counterparts.  The Poggiol Il Castellare was outscored by just one Brunello from the 2005 vintage!

There is plenty of earth and spices on the nose.  On the palate there are flavors of crushed cherries, red berries, cedar, and a silky long finish.

Reviews

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 90 Points

Poggio il Castellare’s 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is an attractive Brunello to drink over the next decade or so. Soft red fruit, spices, earthiness and herbs come together on a mid-weight frame. The intensity tapers off just a touch but on the finish, but the wine possesses lovely overall balance just the same. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

Wine Spectator 93 Points

Really powerful for the vintage, with plenty of ripe fruit and cedary new wood, yet balanced and pretty. Full-bodied, with polished tannins and a long finish. Needs a year or two to come completely together. Best after 2011. 3,335 cases made.–JS
