Poggio Antico--Where Everything Comes Together to Produce Great Wine

Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino's most consistent producers. The wines are made in a rich, fruit-driven style, that is sure to please. Located at an average altitude of approximately 1500 feet above sea level, Poggio Antico is one of the highest altitude producers of Brunello. The steady breezes at this altitude keep the grapes free from fog, frost and mildew and cool the grapes in the evening for optimum maturity. The south to southwest orientation of the vineyards catch the warmth of the midday sun. This combination of warm sun and cooling evening breezes guarantee ideal growing conditions, particularly during the crucial maturation period when the grapes gradually reach a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. The rocky, limestone soil ensures excellent drainage, further aiding the production of top quality raw material for the wine. The unique combination of altitude, positioning, and soil quality give Poggio Antico wines their special character and elegance.

Altero is Poggio Antico's flagship, introduced in 1983 as a departure from the traditional Brunello. It is aged entirely in small French oak barriques, rather than the classic larger Slavonian oak casks of Montalcino. The resulting increase in richness and depth of flavor is so clear that many other producers have followed the lead of Poggio Antico, and have adopted similar techniques.

Reviews

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 94 Points

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is aged for two years in 500-liter French oak barrels and another two years in bottle. Here the oak gives the wine much of its volume and shape without coming across as over bearing. Dark wild cherries, new leather, spices, minerals and menthol flow effortlessly from this seamless, beautifully ripe Brunello. The intensity of the fruit carries through nicely on the long, polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.

James Suckling 95 Points

Aromas of beautiful ripe plums and berries on the nose follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long velvety textured finish. The new wood, cedar, chocolate and fresh mushroom character dominates now. Big and juicy. Best after 2014.
