Burgundy Meets Spain with this 91 point Screaming Value From Spain

The region of Bierzo, in the northwest corner of Spain, is getting noticed more and more these days. The predominant grape grown in Bierzo is Mencia. The Mencia grape benefits from a cool climate, hillside vineyards, mineral-laden soil, and low-yielding old vines.  All of these conditions help to make wines with great concentration, complexity, and amazing purity.

Along with the typical concentration you expect from old vine fruit from Spain, the 2008 Petalos Bierzo displays a great silky texture and Burgundy like purity!

The entry-level 2008 Petalos del Bierzo is sourced from rented vineyards ranging in age from 40-90 years. It spends a few weeks in new French barriques followed by 6-10 months in seasoned oak. Purple in color with an alluring nose of lavender, incense, spice box, black cherry, and blueberry, on the palate it has excellent volume, intensity, and layered fruit. It has the structure to evolve for 1-2 years but can be approached now. It is an outstanding value and introduction to the Mencia grape.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios was founded in 1998 by Alvaro Palacios. It has steep hillside vineyards ranging in age from 60-100 years planted to 100% Mencia, the indigenous grape of cool-climate Bierzo. The vineyards are biodynamically farmed and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Inky ruby. Spicy red and dark berry aromas are complemented by notes of cherry pit, licorice, black tea and violet. Racy and focused, offering zesty cherry and red berry flavors and a firm mineral spine. Fleshes out with air and finishes on a sweet note of blackberry, with very good clarity and spicy persistence. There's no excess fat on these bones.
