Meet the Staff
Gary Fisch, Owner
When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in Political Science, he didn’t yet know where life was going to take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, and decided to become an expert. He educated himself at the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World’s wine courses. The secret to his success is a passionate love and broad knowledge of his product — and the skill to communicate that delight. That enthusiasm and intelligence served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. Two moves later, Gary’s now has stores in Bernardsville, N.J.and on Route 23 North in Wayne N.J. Gary’s expertise has earned him national media attention as “The Wine Guy” on the TV Food Network show Bobby Flay Hot off the Grill. He has made guest appearances on CNN, New Jersey 12 and Bloomberg radio and television. In January 2009, he was profiled in New Jersey Monthly’s “Power Issue” as one of the 101 Most Influential People in the Garden State. Not bad for a guy who simply loves to share his enthusiasm for wine!
David Marshall, Manager
I have worked in the wine business in one way or another since 1985. Ten years ago, when I decided to make a career change, I was fortunate enough to work in the Napa Valley. I fell in love with the whole process of winemaking, especially being in the vineyard where it all begins. My earliest preferences were for Rieslings from great German estates, and Napa gave me a special fondness for older Cabernets and big old-vine Zinfandels. A promotion for my wife brought us east, and working for Gary's was a must! I am very proud to be part of his team and look forward to sharing our passion for wine with you.
Bill Burke, Wine Team
I started at Gary’s in April 2015, but my passion for wine started after the release of the 1995 Bordeaux vintage. It seemed no matter where I looked there were great things being written about this classic vintage and my curiosity was peaked. I did everything I could to learn about Bordeaux’s magnificent chateaus.
Not long after and following many trips to the wine stores throughout New York City, I decided to formalize my wine education through the Wine & Spirits Education Trust and earned a WSET certification. Currently, I am taking online courses through the Gallo Wine University. My interest is not just limited to wine. I also have a keen interest in spirits, including Scotch, Bourbon, Rum and the culture of the cocktail. However, wine remains my favorite and I am constantly exploring wine regions and searching out those wines of great value.
Gary’s has a wonderful culture. We treat our guests with respect and honesty, which we’re constantly complimented on. It’s always wonderful to interact with guests and hear about wines and regions they are passionate about.
When the weather warms and I am not at Gary’s, you can find me fly-fishing throughout New Jersey’s many trout streams. Ask me about the Black River, Ken Lockwood Gorge, and my favorite fly-fishing spots.
Andrew Deakin, Gourmet Team Leader
I have been a cheese enthusiast for years. Being British, I am a little biased towards English Cheddars. However, after sampling the great variety we have in our stores, I really can't say I have a favorite cheese or even a favorite type of cheese. The thought of making a cheese platter of my four favorites keeps me up at night.
Outside of work, I enjoy running, hiking, camping, watching the New York Red Bulls and generally keeping myself busy. And after all that, I enjoy nothing more than a good beer and using cheese in interesting ways – personal favorites include experimental gourmet hot-dogs. I love working at Gary’s and I look forward to meeting you and discussing all things food!
Tim Hearne, Beer Team Leader
After several years of being immersed in the craft beer industry, I was excited to join Gary’s and manage the Beer Department in Bernardsville. We have an amazing selection of craft beers, and I hope to continue the trend of introducing new beers to our customers. As a Certified Beer Server from the Cicerone Program and numerous years of hosting craft beer seminars and tastings, I have taken my love of beer to the next level. While some people gravitate toward certain styles, I do not. I am all about experimentation with craft beer and am looking forward to introducing both the novice and the enthusiast to some of the unique beers we sell at Gary’s.
Rob Hunter, Wine Team
I first started working in the wine industry in the late 90's as a way to pay my way through college and found that I had an interest in wine, craft beers, spirits, and food. I quickly began listening, reading, and trying new wines, foods, as well as traveling to visit wineries to pick up as much as I could. I enjoy cooking (minus the dishes), talking about wine, music, history, and sports. I enjoy California Cabs, Zins, Rhone wines, and wines from Bordeaux. I look forward to meeting you and helping you out in any way I can.
Raymond Mogenis, Wine Team
I am honored to be part of the team at Gary's in Bernardsville. Having been in the restaurant and wine industry for over 25 years, I have traveled the world tasting wines and learning about wine producing regions. I am particularly fond of wines from Italy, and am exceptionally skilled at matching wine with regional Italian cuisine. I am also a great resource for questions about spirits. My experience as a head bartender and bar manger allowed me to develop a passion for high-end spirits, including vodkas, bourbon/whiskies and tequilas. I looks forward to meeting you and assisting you in any way I can.
Ray Prato, Wine Team
While I was attending Teterboro School of Aeronautics, I also worked within a wine and spirits department of a major grocery store. I worked there for 13 years, and went on to work for a couple of major New Jersey wine & spirits retail stores. This experience laid down the education and skills toward a 34-year career within the wine & spirits industry. Working at Gary’s provides me with the opportunity expand my career, work within a great environment, share my knowledge and learn from my fellow co-workers, and also work within a field that I enjoy participating in tasting wine & amazing food.
John Shovlin, Wine Team
My favorite wines are Californian Cabs and Chardonnays, but my favorite part of working at Gary's is building relationships with our guests. I enjoy giving recommendations and am happy to hear from our guests every time that they enjoyed the wine! It's exciting to share the discovery of so many great wines!
