Meet the Staff
Gary Fisch, Owner
When Gary was working toward his B.S. from Rider College in Political Science, he didn’t yet know where life was going to take him. Gary fell in love with wine in his senior year of college while working with his father, a liquor salesman, and decided to become an expert. He educated himself at the Sommelier Institute in New Jersey and at several of Windows on the World’s wine courses. The secret to his success is a passionate love and broad knowledge of his product — and the skill to communicate that delight. That enthusiasm and intelligence served him well when he teamed up with his brother Mark in 1987 and opened his first store in Madison, New Jersey. Two moves later, Gary’s now has stores in Bernardsville, N.J.and on Route 23 North in Wayne N.J. Gary’s expertise has earned him national media attention as “The Wine Guy” on the TV Food Network show Bobby Flay Hot off the Grill. He has made guest appearances on CNN, New Jersey 12 and Bloomberg radio and television. In January 2009, he was profiled in New Jersey Monthly’s “Power Issue” as one of the 101 Most Influential People in the Garden State. Not bad for a guy who simply loves to share his enthusiasm for wine!
Anthony Bencivenga, Manager
I began my Food and Beverage career as a server at a local family owned restaurant in Bergen County, NJ. In 1995, by chance, I landed a job with Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. After learning just about every role there was at Disney World, I landed back on the food and beverage side of the business, first with Quick Service at the Resorts then at Epcotís Signature Restaurant the Coral Reef. While there, I received the Beginner Level Certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers. In 2005, with a strong passion for service and a new appreciation of Wine & Spirits, I returned to New Jersey to bring my expertise to the hotel business before landing my first job in wine retail. In 2012, I was extremely lucky to become a member of the Gary Wine & Marketplace team in Wayne.
Chad Watkins, Wine Club Director
I started working with Gary in October of 2008. Since then I have only grown to love and appreciate wine more and more. My first loves were the Rieslings and Gewuerztraminers of Alsace, where I studied French in college, and I still enjoy them. My philosophy is and has always been to try new wines all the time. There are too many wines out there to drink the same thing every day. My curious nature has also drawn me to formal wine education where I have earned my Intermediate Certificate with Distinction from the WSET and gained the title of Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) from the Society of Wine Educators. I also spent a week in Bordeaux, France in June 2009 where I became a Certified Bordeaux Educator. I look forward to learning even more about wine and sharing that with others.
Jon Visser, Wine Director
I've been in the wine industry for over ten years. Starting at Carlo Russo’s Wine & Spirit World in Fort Lee as a stock clerk/cashier, I soon became interested in learning about wine. After graduating from college, I took wine classes in New York at Harriet Lembeck’s. After finishing her program, I worked for William Grant & Sons as a salesperson in New Jersey and then returned to retail as the wine manager at Carlo Russo’s. I enjoy wines from all over the world, especially the great values out of Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The region that I am most passionate about is Bordeaux. The best wine I’ve ever had is Cheval Blanc 1985, drunk at a bachelor party for one of my best friends. I was 25 and the bottle cost only $85. I wish I could get more at that price!
Patty Sparacia-Missey, Internet Manager
I began my career at Gary’s in October 2009 as the Internet/Guest Service Manager. At that time our Internet dept. was really starting to grow - it is now booming! I love talking to so many wine lovers around the country, and I will do whatever it takes to ensure their experience with Gary’s is perfect. I bring to Gary’s over 18 years in retail/sales management, and 10 years HR/Personnel experience. Basically I love people and, not to mention, have a long-standing love of wine! If you need help with an order, don’t hesitate to call me. I am always happy to hear from our guests.
Chris Freudenreich, Wine Team
After twenty-five years with a major German bank I decided it was time for a career change. Being fortunate to have spent time in great wine producing regions (Bacharach in the Rheingau in Germany, Sicily, Provence, Vienna, Austria, Monterey, and Sonoma) wine seemed an obvious choice. I prepared by completing the Intermediate and Advanced WSET wine Exams, as well as an Intensive Wine Program at the French Culinary Institute in NYC. At Garyís Iím putting my wine knowledge and wine experiences to use every day with our guests and with fellow staff members as I continue with my formal wine education. I passed the Society of Wine Educators CSW exam in November 2012 and plan to continue on with the Certified Wine Educator program in 2013. My favorite wines include the Cremants of Alsace and Burgundy, German Rieslings, Austrian Blaufrankish and Gruner Veltiner wines, and Etna Rossos from Sicily.
Gerard Shirley, Wine Team
Iíve had a long time passion for wine, learning all I could while pulling corks in my leisure time. After a long career in Graphic Arts producing projects for Ad Agencies and Financial corporations, I finally decided to pursue my passion and switch careers over to the wine industry. Prior to joining Garyís, I held a management/sales position with a Sonoma company primarily working with California winery clients on the East Coast. During this time, I began pursuing my wine education with the WSET in New York working to level 4 Diploma. I love wine from all over the world and the significance it plays in global culture and cuisine. wine course. After countless seminars, classes, tours, and certifications, I spent subsequent years in South Florida working in wine sales and as a wine buyer. I joined the team at Garyís Wine & Marketplace after complete immersion into the wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux while working in New York Cityís most prestigious wine shop. I have had the good fortune to travel to many of the finest wine growing regions on the planet and continue to do so. The allure of wine to me is knowing that I can study all day every day, and never stop learning. I am fascinated by the cheeky, the geeky and all the characters in between of the wine world and love sharing what I can with you! I am a champion for New World wines and think your Champagne glass should never be half empty and should always be half full!
Donna Garvey, Wine Team
After an almost 20 year career in corporate finance, I decided I was ready to focus on something I truly loved and that made me happy...Wine. So, I quit my job as VP of Finance and got a part-time job in a wine shop that also happened to have a bar. After a year and a half, I became a partner in that wine shop/bar, and over the next ten years I expanded my knowledge of wine and how to match the right wine to the wine customer. If you ask me for a recommendation, I'll likely ask you four or five questions back in my attempt to find that exact wine you're looking for. My goal is that you take the bottle home, love it, and come on back for more.
Matt Morgenfruh, Gourmet Team Leader
Garyís started as a part-time job while I was in college. I had several friends that worked for Garyís and they always told me how much fun it was to work in the Gourmet Department - so I decided to apply. My friends were right Ė it was fun, but I also learned a lot about cheese! Within a year, I was promoted to Gourmet Team Leader, and I love it. My interest in cheese continues to grow every day, and my goal is to continue to provide you with exceptional service and hopefully introduce you to some of our scrumptious gourmet items. Just like wine, sampling is a fun way to discover new cheeses, and I am always happy to share a new favorite with our customers.
