Great Collection of 2007 Southern Rhone/Roussillon Wines
Six 90+ pointers including five wines from the great 2007 vintage in the Southern Rhone and a 92 pointer from the Cotes du Roussillon that we had to include because it matches the exceptional quality of a Southern Rhone from 2007 and it is made from a similar blend.
Reviews 2007 Domaine Galevan Chateauneuf du Pape Robert Parker 91+ points The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre) possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of ground pepper, soy, plum, fig, and oodles of black raspberry and black cherry fruit. Full-bodied, lush, pure, and beautifully textured, it should drink well young, and keep for 12-15 or more years.
2007 Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 Wine Spectator 90 points Silky and racy, with a floral note in front of gorgeous raspberry and boysenberry fruit that's laced with graphite and red licorice notes. The long, fine-grained finish has nice buried grip. Drink now through 2011. 4,165 cases made.
2007 Domaine Grand Bourjassot Vacqueyras Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90 points Vivid ruby. Slow-to-open nose displays aromas of dark berries, smoked meat and incense. Deeply concentrated cassis and kirsch flavors are firmed by chewy tannins and lifted by tangy minerals. Very primary but extremely promising, finishing with good lift and cut, not to mention real cling.
2007 Chateau Saint Roch Chimeres Cotes du Roussillon Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 92 points ...Fresh and jam-like layers of black raspberry, rhubarb, and fresh cherry in the nose and mouth are tinged with resinous sage, rosemary, and lavender, while striking top notes of gentian and violet waft from the glass. For all of its saturating sweet ripeness and fresh berry brightness on a silken-textured palate, this also harbors low-toned roast meatiness, while piquant notes of toasted pistachio and almond, black pepper, cherry pit, and herbs keep its long finish far from any danger of succumbing to superficial sweetness. It will be worth following for at least 3-4 years, if not longer.
2007 Domaine de la Janasse Cote du Rhone Villages Terre d'Argile Robert Parker 91 points The opaque purple-hued 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Terre d'Argile (a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvedre) reveals a big, sweet perfume of creosote, licorice, blackberries, and kirsch. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and a remarkably long finish, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 4-6 years.
2007 Domaine la Barroche Chateauneuf du Pape Signature Robert Parker 92 points More structured, backward, and formidably endowed is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition. Made from a blend of over 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Cinsault, with some very old-vine fruit going into the blend, this wine is also aged in a combination of tank and foudre prior to bottling. Deep plum/ruby-colored with a striking nose of loamy soil scents interwoven with exuberant kirsch liqueur notes, licorice, and roasted Provencal herbs, the wine is backward, dense, full-bodied, and very pure, with a brilliant texture and length. This wine will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring and drink well for 15+ years.
